Girls + Zines at Tatty Devine

So I managed to catch Girls + Zines at Tatty Devine before it ended! It was awesome to see my own zines on display among such an amazing and varied collection. If you missed it, all zines will be on archive at the The Women's Library for your viewing pleasure...

These were some of my favourites... (click on the artist names to go to their websites)

Cooking With Christ by Chloe Greenfield
A compilation of yummy Bible inspired recipes accompanied by her own illustrations. I thought the 'choco-virgins' looked particularly scrummy...

I loved the illustrations in 'Tomboy' by Eleni Kalorkoti

As an avid John Hughes fan, I couldn't help but fall in love with this celebration of his films: 'If You Were Here' by Victoria

'Discover. Draw. Display' by Maya Alvarado is a collection of beautifully illustrated everyday objects.

With my unfulfilled dream of being a skateboarder (I fell off the one and only time I ever attempted it), I loved 'Brash' by Alana, an eclectic collection of illustrations, photographs and interviews celebrating girls who skateboard.

'A Life Less Ordinary' by Chloe Cook is a beautifully illustrated collection of portraits of decievingly mundane looking people who've led extraordinary lives.

'the friends that I skate with & run joke with' by Nina Manandhar was a gorgeous collection of black and white photographs documenting the day of a group of friends in London.

And finally, I'd be a bad friend if I didn't mention Sheeta Li's illustrated celebration of Johnathan Creek, bound together into a beautiful concertina...

And Isobel Kho's humourous illustrated anthology of the TV shows we all love to hate (yet still end up watching) in 'Guilty Pleasure Television'.

A big thanks to Barbara Ryan for creating/curating the exhibition!

And on a side note, I stumbled across Gosh on my travels...a newly opened shop on the corner of Berwick Street.

It's a treasure-trove of all the comics/graphic novels/zines you could ever imagine. If you're ever around Soho, you should definately check it out!

Finished zines

Finally finished my 'Things Not to Say On a Lesbian Date' zine, unfortunately all based on true quotes said by my friends! I also  re-did my 'Soho' zine; took out the quotes and changed some of the pictures. I sent them off last week and I'll put more info up about the showcase soon!

Nearly there...

Just need to bind my zine and get my portfolio pages checked over before I get them printed, then it's on to the fun task of labelling, sorting, printing, getting the right bits of paper into the right sketchbooks/folders etc. Fun times.

Here's a few of my finished zine pages...

Soho zine

I plan to do a quick little mini-zine on Soho! Just something quick and celebtrating other people's favourite thing to do there, whether it be certain restaurant or club... or maybe something more general like the atmosphere as you walk through at night, taking sneak peeks at the sex shops or sipping cider on the streets.
Whatever it is, I'd really really grateful if anyone can give me a couple of lines about their favourite thing about it and possibly a photo... : )

Yet more paintings

My tutor told me that I don't need a specific context, i.e a book or posters to place my images in as the images work by themselves, but I think that it'd be nice to get two hardback books printed. One to represent Harrow on the Hill, and one for Soho. Even if they're not used for my final outcome, it'd be a nice way to bind the images together.
Anyways, here's some more paintings.

Unfinished

This still needs a background painted in. And the card seems to be making the paint go weird, especially the black :(
Aiming to do a finished painting everyday this week. It WILL happen!

Just a couple of people

Worked from photos and observations.

Observations

Moving away from maps now. I want to focus more on the people you find around Soho, and different landmarks.
I went in to do a few observations and experimented a bit with them. Here's a few little pictures.

Cafe 54

Sorry, SUCH a bad photo but it was too big to scan in my little scanner.

GAY

Have decided to make two maps. One on Soho nightlife, e.g bars and clubs, and one on independent eateries, namely coffee/tea shops. Both will be mainly based around Old Compton Street.
Went out on a busy Saturday night and took a few photos of Old Compton Street on my friend's camera, and now I've started experimenting on different sufaces and making an rough a1 map planning the different locations of the places I want to use.
Anyway, here's a little picture of G.A.Y on an old Graze Box.

If anyone knows of any good places to drink or eat in the area, please let me know!
